SEO MCP servers: three questions before you connect

An SEO MCP server connects an assistant such as Claude or ChatGPT to a service's declared capabilities. It may retrieve data, save records or perform approved actions, depending on the connection. Before authorizing one, ask what it can read and change, how you revoke access and how usage is charged. The protocol name alone answers none of those business questions.

Permission-review method prepared 21 October 2026. No live consent-screen walkthrough claimed.

Key takeaways

  • MCP standardizes a connection; each service determines its data and action scope.
  • Read-only access can still expose sensitive information.
  • Removing an assistant connection, revoking publishing credentials and requesting deletion are separate actions.
  • Host access and provider usage can have separate costs.

What a connector does in plain language

Think of the assistant as the place where you express a goal and the connected service as the place where a specific capability runs. Your request might ask for saved page findings, a keyword shortlist or a draft record. The service decides which operations exist and what your authorized account may access.

That distinction matters because an assistant can discuss far more than a connector can actually measure. It may explain backlinks without having a backlink index connected. It may suggest a search phrase without retrieving search volume. A confident answer is not a substitute for an identified data source.

MCP provides a shared way to describe and call capabilities. It does not mean that every connected service has the same research coverage, permissions, reliability or review controls. Choosing a connection therefore starts with the work you need and the evidence it can return.

Question 1: what can it read and change?

Ask for a capability inventory in ordinary language before giving it a broad task. Separate read operations, stored-record changes and actions that reach another system. Those groups carry different consequences, even when the host presents them in the same conversation.

A read operation may retrieve private business information. A record change may alter a plan that a colleague uses. Publication may place text on a public website. Calling all three “access” hides the decisions you need to make about them.

For each group, ask what limits the account to its own workspace. Does a person choose the workspace during consent? Does the service check that the selected site and record belong to it? The assistant's intention to use the right customer is not an access-control mechanism.

Before doing any work, summarize the capabilities available
through this connection. Group them as reads, record changes,
external writes and unsupported requests.
State what source each answer can use.
Do not infer permissions from the names of other products.

Treat that prompt as an aid to inspection, not a security test. Compare the answer with the actual connection's capability list and provider documentation. If they disagree, stop dependent work until you know which edition is connected.

Read-only still deserves a review

A read-only connection can reveal unpublished plans, lead details or account records. Limit the material included in a conversation to what the job requires. When a sample will do, use a sample with personal details removed rather than uploading an entire customer history.

Also distinguish “read-only” from “no stored side effects.” Some measurements may be retained as history. AdvisorSEO's documented page-speed exception stores successful measurements without another confirmation step. Ask about that behavior explicitly instead of assuming every read leaves nothing behind.

Question 2: how do sign-in and revocation work?

A typical remote authorization flow sends you to sign in and review consent. Read the account identity, provider domain, requested scope and workspace before approving. Do not approve a screen merely because you reached it from a familiar conversation.

The MCP authorization specification describes requirements for authorized HTTP connections. MCP authorization specification. That is a protocol reference, not proof that a particular service implements every requirement correctly. Provider behavior and host configuration still need their own verification.

In AdvisorSEO's documented flow, a human chooses the workspace at consent and the connection is bound to it. Start by listing sites and reading the selected profile. That modest first request helps catch an account mismatch before a record change or publication request.

Host interfaces evolve. Claude documents custom remote connections; ChatGPT documents custom MCP connection testing subject to account and workspace policies. Follow the current host instructions and review the discovered capabilities. Do not treat a setup guide as proof of acceptance into a public directory.

Revocation is a set of actions

Removing the connection from Claude or ChatGPT ends that connection's access. It does not necessarily revoke an external credential previously supplied to the service. For WordPress, revoke the dedicated Application Password in WordPress as well.

If lead capture is installed, remove its component from the website separately. If you want stored records removed, make a deletion request under the provider's policy. Disconnecting, stopping capture, revoking publication and deleting data solve different problems.

Record who can perform each action and where. This is especially useful in an agency: the person who controls a host connection may not administer the client's website. A practical exit plan should work when the original operator is unavailable.

Question 3: what will requests cost?

Ask about the host subscription and the data provider separately. Being able to connect does not establish that every request is included. A provider may meter requests, returned rows, research units or another allowance; the unit needs a definition before you can estimate usage.

Request a small representative task and understand its expected scope before authorizing a large batch. Read the provider's current allowance and overage behavior. A connection that works for one page may have a different cost profile when asked to analyze many domains.

Do not compare prices without comparing the job. One service may supply research data; another may store your own plans and drafts. The same number of conversational requests can represent entirely different work and datasets.

For AdvisorSEO, paid catalog figures are planned and billing availability should be checked with the account team. This guide does not promise purchasable entitlements or verified enforcement. Existing agreements can also differ from planned marketing prices, so resolve the actual account terms before relying on them.

An illustrative review for Peak Plumbing

Imagine the fictional Peak Plumbing owner considering a connection for service-page editing. Their immediate job is to review business facts and prepare one draft. They do not need automated publication or access to customer lead details to complete that first task.

Here is an illustrative review record, not a live consent output or customer result:

Intended job: prepare a reviewed service-page draft
Required reads: selected site's profile and chosen page evidence
Required changes: save the reviewed draft after confirmation
External publication: not authorized for this exercise
Sensitive data: no lead records needed
Exit: remove connection; revoke any separate site credential
Unknown: production publishing walkthrough not verified

The useful consequence is a smaller first task. The owner can evaluate the draft workflow without treating account connection as blanket permission for every later action. If the project expands to publication, the permission review expands with it.

Use a second prompt to make the boundary explicit:

Work only on the selected site's reviewed draft.
Use supplied facts and label missing evidence.
Show a preview before changing stored records.
Do not publish or request credentials in this conversation.
Stop if the available connection cannot support this scope.

If the assistant says a missing feature is available, ask it to identify the actual capability and returned evidence. Do not accept a simulated response as proof that a connector ran. A narrative about what would happen belongs in an example, clearly labelled as such.

Apply the questions to AdvisorSEO honestly

AdvisorSEO's six documented families cover business context, planning, checks, readiness, content with approval and captured enquiries. The family names describe scope. They do not establish that every account has every capability or that each integration has passed a production walkthrough.

Stored keywords are supplied records, not a web-wide keyword research index. Static readiness checks do not query answer engines or measure citations. Search Console and GA4 access for outside users are not established by this guide. Automated AI-answer tracking is planned.

The publication path requires appropriate setup and approval. Its existence in source is not proof of successful customer publishing or a general rollback capability. Ask support to confirm secure credential entry and the current availability for your account before attempting that step.

The narrower directory edition is a separate read-only surface prepared for review. It does not inherit publication actions from the fuller connector. A submitted edition is not an approved directory listing until that listing actually appears.

Keep a one-page connection record

Write down the provider, edition, intended workspace, required permissions, cost basis, reviewer and exit steps. Add the date you checked the documentation. That record gives a colleague enough information to review access later without copying secrets or replaying a conversation.

Revisit it when the provider adds capabilities, your account changes or a new customer site is introduced. Permission review is part of maintaining a connection, not a one-time ritual that makes future changes automatically acceptable.

Choose the connection that supplies the evidence your work requires. If you need broad research datasets, evaluate providers that actually maintain them. If you need a reviewed workflow over your own records, verify that workflow directly. The common protocol makes connections possible; it does not make their jobs interchangeable.

What this does not do

This guide is a review method, not a security certification or a guarantee about any vendor. It does not prove AdvisorSEO directory approval, outside-user Google access, enforced plan entitlements or successful WordPress publishing. Inspect your actual consent and capability list.

Method and data note

The explanation uses current host documentation, the MCP authorization specification and AdvisorSEO's documented scope. The Peak Plumbing review record is illustrative. No tokens, credentials, paid requests or authenticated consent sessions were used.

Editorial preparation: 21 October 2026. Prompts are proposed instructions. No authenticated AdvisorSEO, Claude or ChatGPT execution, independent replay, customer test or commercial outcome is claimed here. Missing evidence stays unknown.

Questions, answered

Is MCP automatically safe?

No. Safety depends on the service, permission scope, host behavior, data handling and action controls. Review the specific connection rather than treating the protocol name as a certification.

Can a connector publish without me?

Different services expose different actions and approval rules. AdvisorSEO describes a preview-and-confirm publication process, but this guide does not report a verified production publishing test.

Should I paste a WordPress password into chat?

No. Follow the verified secure credential-entry route. Until self-service entry is confirmed, ask support how to set it up without sending the secret itself.

Does disconnecting delete my records?

Not necessarily. Remove the assistant connection, revoke external publishing access, remove capture if installed and request data deletion separately.
